SLL London Events - Uchronia, meaning no time from Utopia or the Greek, Ou-Topos

SLL are delighted to be hosting an event of presentations delivered by prominent figures within the lighting industry, looking at a variety of subjects.

The speakers and presentations will be as follows;

Time at the Intersection of Design, Chronosociology and Chronobiology - Dr Helga Schmid

The societal transformation from an agricultural to an urbanised 24 /7 society, reflected in a move from natural time to the mechanical clock to the contemporary digital age, has significantly influenced our daily biological and social rhythms. Modern technology has fostered an increasing temporal fragmentation, heralding an era of flexible time with ever more complex processes of synchronisation.

uchronia —a term derived from the Greek word

ou-chronos mea ning ‘ no time ’ or ‘non-time’, and from utopia, from the Greek ou-topos.

The research develops an original uchronian methodology and applications of uchronian thinking in practice-led design research, intertwining design,chronobiological and chronosociological research to propose a new area of chronodesign.

Helga is a communication designer, design researcher and lecturer. Recently, she finished her PhD in Visual Communication at the Royal College of Art, She was a researcher at the Architecture and Design depart-ment at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

She has received a number of international awards including the Type Directors Award, Art Directors Award, Best German Books Award as well as a Fulbright scholarship and two DAAD scholarships. Helga has a background as a communication designer, holding a postgraduate degree from the University of Applied Sciences in Augsburg, Germany and a Masters degree in the MFA design programme from the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Vitamin D and the Effects on our Health - Dr Andrea Darling

Dr Darling’s talk will discuss how we get vitamin D from the sunlight and our diet, as well as the effects of vitamin D on our health.  She will discuss the factors influencing the effectiveness of sunlight in making vitamin D, as well as the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the UK.

Dr Andrea Darling is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Surrey.  She has worked in vitamin D research since 2008, examining vitamin D status, light exposure and associated health outcomes in UK women. To date she has published 11 peer-reviewed papers and 3 book chapters in the field of Nutrition. Of note, her key research on vitamin D in South Asian women was recently used to inform the new Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition UK guidelines for vitamin D (2016). She was previously a Research Associate in Epidemiology at the prestigious School of Public Health at Imperial College London, whereby she researched the association between vitamin D status and cancer risk. She has received two Young Investigator awards from the UK National Osteoporosis Society (2009 and 2014) as well as the University of Surrey Postgraduate Researcher of the Year for the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences in 2013.

From the Lighting Designer - Inessa Demidova

The talk will provide a perspective on understanding of light and circadian rhythms from a lighting designer’s standpoint. Combining the strengths of lighting design profession with the current knowns and unknowns about the topic, a new approach is imagined that goes beyond current dominant proposals in the industry.

Inessa Demidova is an architectural lighting designer working at Arup offices in London. With a background in spatial design and critical design thinking, her main interest is providing more meaningful lighting design serving people and places.
