VIA Events is looking for new speakers – young, inspired presenters, the lighting professionals of tomorrow! The final round of the competition will be held at PLDC offering the talents who make it to the final round the chance to present to a professional audience.

The Challenge consists of four Rounds through which the best young designers will be selected. Six experienced designers from different parts of the world will be coaching the students to success!
The competition has the aim of activating more students to learn from each other and from experienced professionals and, together with their schools, become a more accepted part of the lighting design community.

The best six talents will present their paper at PLDC 2017 in Paris. A full day track will be dedicated to the newcomers and young researchers, offering them the opportunity to present to an international and professional audience. The overall winner will be announced at the PLDC Gala Dinner and will receive a money prize.

Format of competition:

Round I (April 2016) Digital: Call for Topics at the universities involved: a panel of experts from the respective universities select a maximum of ten topics to continue to the next round.
See the list of winners here.

Round II (Jun/Jul2016) Digital: The selected students from Round I will be asked to film a three-minute “elevator pitch” to convince a jury of five lighting professionals.

The professional jury will evaluate all the films submitted by the universities and select the best eighteen to go through to Round III (conference in London).

Round III (February 2017) Live: A two and a half day mini-conference at which the eighteen winners from Round II each present a 15-minute paper on their topic. Each coach selects one talent from their team with whom they enter the final!

The programme will also include professional papers given by the coaches and a students’ critical debate or student quiz as well as networking activities.

More information on the warm-up in London to follow shortly!

Round IV (October 2017) Live: The best six speakers present a 45-minute paper at PLDC 2017 in Paris.

This series of presentations will be an official part of the PLDC conference and offers the students the opportunity to present to an international audience.

An independent jury of educators then selects the Best Speaker at the end of the day.
